Safety in Rope Access: Our Top Priority

At Masters Co, safety is not just a requirement – it’s a core value embedded in everything we do. As a professional rope access company, we understand that our work involves accessing high, challenging, and sometimes hazardous areas. That’s why we are committed to adhering to the highest safety standards to ensure the protection of our team, clients, and the general public.

Masters Co carries $20 million in Public Liability and all staff are covered with Workers Compensation.

Why Safety Matters in Rope Access

Rope access is an inherently safe and efficient method for working at height, but it requires strict protocols to mitigate any risks. The use of ropes, harnesses, and other equipment demands careful planning, skilled personnel, and the best safety practices in the industry. With the right approach, rope access can significantly reduce risks, and we make it our mission to minimize any chance of accidents or mishaps.

Our Safety Protocols and Measures

1. Certified & Trained Technicians
Every technician is fully certified in rope access techniques. We ensure our team undergoes regular training through internationally recognized certifications such as IRATA (International Rope Access Trade Association). These certifications ensure that our team members are not only skilled in technical rope access but also trained in emergency procedures, rescue techniques, and advanced safety practices.

2. Risk Assessment and SWMS
Before starting any rope access project, a comprehensive risk assessment is carried out to identify potential hazards, assess environmental conditions, and plan the safest approach for the job. We also:

  • Evaluate building structures and potential access points
  • Assess weather conditions (e.g., wind, rain, temperature
  • Determine the required equipment, including fall protection systems
  • Create a detailed work plan with specific roles, responsibilities, and safety measures3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
We supply all technicians with high-quality PPE, ensuring they have the proper gear for every job. This includes:
  • Harnesses with integrated fall protection systems
  • Helmets for head protection
  • Gloves for grip and protection
  • Carabiners, ropes, and descender devices for safe ascents and descents
  • Backup fall protection systems (e.g., two-rope systems)
  • High-visibility clothing when necessary

4. Two-Rope System

For added security, we always use a two-rope system—a primary rope for work and a secondary safety rope (or backup) in case of failure. This redundancy ensures that even if one rope is compromised, the technician remains safely secured. The second rope is always in place and continuously monitored.

5. Emergency Preparedness
In the event of an emergency, our team is fully trained in rope access rescue procedures. We conduct regular drills and practice rescues to ensure readiness for any situation. Our technicians carry communication devices, allowing them to stay in contact with ground-level support during operations, ensuring quick response times in emergencies.

Safety

6. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
Rope access requires specialized equipment, which is why we maintain a rigorous inspection and maintenance schedule for all tools, ropes, and safety gear. Each piece of equipment is regularly checked for wear and tear to ensure it remains in optimal working condition. Faulty or worn equipment is replaced immediately.

7. Worksite Safety
Safety on the ground is as important as safety at height. We cordon off work areas to prevent accidental access by pedestrians, vehicles, or other non-authorized personnel. Warning signs and barriers are placed in key areas to alert the public and staff of ongoing work.

8. Compliance with Industry Standards
We adhere to the highest standards in rope access, including:

  • IRATA safety guidelines
  • Work at Height Regulations (local regulations)
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards

9. Ongoing Safety Training
Safety is a continuous process. We invest in ongoing training programs to keep our team up-to-date with the latest safety procedures, technologies, and best practices. This includes refresher courses, scenario-based training, and external safety audits.
